The basic hypermedia model offers a set of very general abstractions nodes interconnected by links and tools for navigational access. The user is responsiple for applying these abstractions to a specific task. This generic nature of Hypermedia is a blessing and a curse. Blessing because allows hypermedia to be applied to a wide variety of task domains and user domains. Curse because due to this general structure hypermedia seems to appear useful but not ready to apply clearly to a particular task. Very usually users recognize in Hypermedia a substantial potential for helping them performing some tasks using information, but they can't find a particular system that fits in their special requirements. The degree of extensibilty to hypermedia so far is very small. It is restricted to changes through the user interface which provides the user with pre-programmatic extension options.
